Being Present

Being Present

I guided a trip for 7 yesterday – a groom, his brother and father, along with the groomsmen. I was paired with Mark & Jerry, the brother and father (congrats on your first two trout on the fly, Mark!). As I talked with Jerry (who is in his early 70s), I spoke about the pool we were fishing, it’s history, and told him about Preston Jennings and what he did for American fly fishing. His reactions and smile made me remember to always be present. The reason we are wading into a river and trying to fool a trout is to be out there in nature and surround ourselves with something wild. We had an eagle watching over us, fog rolling upriver, and we were soaking wet from the down pour. We were simply there to all be together, doing nothing more than throwing feathers and hair at fish. Don’t get caught up in always catching a fish, be present and see what’s there that you may have missed.
